Dog Fighting/Michael Vick: An Open Letter To The NFL

Now that Michael Vick has pleaded guilty to the dog fighting charges against him, which also include hanging, drowning, electrocuting, and shooting those dogs who did not perform well, the Humane Society of New York calls upon the NFL to make Michael Vick's suspension permanent .

Michael Vick's heinous acts of animal cruelty have exposed the public to the horrific world of dog fighting. A world where depraved indifference to the pain and suffering of animals is a common occurrence. A world where greed and immorality are the norm.

Athletes are role models to many in our society, particularly children. When athletes participate in criminal and violent activity, the effect of this bad behavior can be far reaching.

Dog fighting is against the law in all 50 states and a felony in 48 states. The Federal Animal Welfare Act also prohibits dog fighting activities.

If the NFL takes a strong stance against such behavior by banning permanently athletes who participate in criminal acts of intentional cruelty to animals, we believe this will lessen the chances that the abhorrent conduct of these athletes will be emulated.

AND TO OUR SUPPORTERS----HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO

Keep your eyes and ears open and report any suspected animal fighting or cruelty to animals to the police and other law enforcement authorities.

Contact the NFL and the Atlanta Falcons and ask that they suspend Vick permanently.
