Trip #3

Saturday, October 1st
My dear friend Carla Bozulich from L.A. has decided to help with the rescue effort by flying out to New York City tonight to help me drive the van (customized by the one and only Bill Berloni for animal transport) down to New Orleans to pick up 10 animals to bring back…

Monday, October 3rd
After dropping Carla off at the Baton Rouge airport I stopped by Lamar Dixon who's operations have completely winded down.

Now only about 500 dogs remain, all pit bulls of which 2 00 are being shipped out tonight. H.S.U.S. has handed rescue back to L.A.S.P.C.A. only unfortunately their shelter isn't up and running yet. Not much left to do at Lamar. I‘ve decided to work with the groups in the city, like Winn Dixie.

Wednesday, October 5th
The National Guard out of Washington State helped us find groups of loose dogs today. We picked up seven.

Thursday, October 6th
Washington State National Guard called me at 6:30 this morning. They had a dog locked behind a gate. I got there in 15 minutes and they helped me break through the gate. He was a beautiful Catahoulah mix, very scared and emaciated but very sweet.

While they were helping me get him in the van the police drove by and told me about an animal needing to be pulled out of a house. The National Guard escorted me there and helped me get in. Inside the house, again a very sweet but very scared dog, a female Rottweiler. After marking both dog's houses and taking notes I dropped them off at Winn Dixie, filling out paperwork on where and when they were found, their descriptions and my contact information.

Clear and detailed paperwork and their photos posted on www.Petfinder.com are the only chance these animals have of being reunited.

Friday, October 7th
Today I spent time tending to animals at Winn Dixie. I have some good potential foster animals to take back with me. Animals that aren't too sick to take the 20+ hour drive.

Saturday, October 8th
Hurray! Carolyn, the Kennel Officer at the Humane Society of New York has offered to help drive the animals back!

Sunday, October 9th
Carolyn and I filled out the paperwork at Winn Dixie and loaded up 6 dogs and 4 cats.

Monday, October 10th
I've become very attached (in more ways than one) with a beautiful gray and white cat I've named Louisa. She's unbelievably affectionate and sweet natured. When Carolyn drives I open Louisa's cage and hold her in my lap. She just calmly and lovingly holds onto me purring and napping.

We made a pitt-stop this morning at Amy's in North Carolina. The dogs all got decent walks and all the cages and cat boxes got thorough cleaning. Amy's daughters, Coco and Chelsea, have helped us name them all.

There's:
Dylan, the little male Beagle who was found swimming in 4 feet of floodwater in the 9 th Ward. Violet, a female Rotti who was found tied up behind a house. Saint (female, lab/chow mix), Chip (male, Cocker-Poo) and Honey Bear (male, Shepherd mix) were all found in different parts of the city running around. Buster (male, Great Dane mix) was surrendered by an owner who could no longer care for him. And the kitties: Louisa, Troy, Carla and Beignet.

Tuesday, October 11th
Raining as we pulled in. Everyone exhausted from the trip. Honey Bear is the most freaked out of all. He can't even bring himself to look at anyone, cowering in the back of his kennel. They all got medical attention with Dr. Dwyer. I love these guys.

Friday, October 21st
At the Humane Society of New York - except for some worms, everyone's doing great. Though, Saint has Heartworm and Troy has F.I.V.

I can't get over how much Honey Bear has come out of his shell. He's very playful and puppy-esque now.
