Hurricane diary by HSNY staff member Lexie Montgomery
Trip #2

Sunday, September 25th
Flew into New Orleans this morning. I've teamed up with Lisa from Seattle. We worked off a great list from Horserescue.com that has descriptions of pets to be rescued with names, addresses and phone numbers. We are able to verify whether an animal is still in need of rescue. Human companions are able to talk us through their homes to find their animals.
Unfortunately, for many it's too late. After having lost everything else, having to tell them that their family member who they were told to leave behind is gone is too much. They are inconsolable.
One Pomeranian, “Pups” we found still alive in his 3 rd floor apartment. His person had been rescued off the roof September 7 th, leaving him behind with a ton of food and water. Now 20 days later we were able to break into her apartment (with the help of her talking us through on the phone) and rescue “Pups”.
As we put him into our truck an electrician told us he had heard a faint bark come from the top floor of a blue house a few blocks down.
What we found was an emaciated intact male brindle Pit Bull locked in a run-down apartment with no food or water. He was very frightened but eager to walk out of there. We dropped him off at the Winn Dixie Camp for vet-care.
Lastly we rescued a ca t off the list named “Sky” because the owner was able to guide us through on the phone (otherwise I never would have seen her). “Sky” was hiding way under a couch.
Monday September 26th
“Sky's” grandpa was able to drive down from Arkansas today to reunite her with her person.
Today we met a local woman who had stayed through the storm to do Neighborhood Pet Watch. She's been living without electricity for nearly 4 weeks now, patrolling the block with her dogs and feeding all her neighbor's cats.

Tuesday, September 27th
Flying back to New York City.
So many animals still need foster care ‘til hopefully their people can find them on www.Petfinder.com
Really I don't know how the American Animal Shelter System, already pushed to the limits from ove r-population (due to lack of spaying and neutering and puppy-mills which take homes away from those in shelters) will manage with all these extra poor lost souls.
There is such a huge need for good homes and so little available.
