23 Jul. 2012

BILL TO REGULATE PET DEALERS ENACTED

Legislation in New York to further regulate pet dealers (this includes pet stores and some breeders) was passed this session. The new law states that pet dealers must implement an appropriate plan to provide dogs with the opportunity for daily exercise. The new law also requires pet dealers to provide an isolation area for animals who appear sick and to designate an attending veterinarian to provide veterinary care to the animals. The veterinarian must make regular visits to the pet dealer’s premises. This legislation (A. 697-D and S. 7268-A) was sponsored by Assemblymember Amy Paulin and Senator Greg Ball.

BILL TO PROHIBIT SALE AND POSSESSION OF ANIMAL FIGHTING PARAPHERNALIA ENACTED

Legislation to strengthen New York’s animal fighting laws to make it a crime to possess or sell animal fighting paraphernalia was passed this session.  This new provision will close a loophole in the animal fighting law and make those involved in this barbaric and illegal activity more accountable (although we believe greater penalties are still needed). This legislation (A. 9552-A and S. 6774-A) was sponsored by Assemblymember McEneny and Senator Ritchie.
