Humane Essay Contest
In celebration of Earth Day, the Humane Society of New York, in conjunction with Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi, held its fourth annual humane essay contest. The topic of this year's contest which was open to 3 rd and 4 th grade students in Nassau County was: “If I had a magic wand, what would I do to make this a better world for animals?” Six winners were chosen from the more than 1000 essays we received. The students, their families and teachers attended an award ceremony with Mr. Suozzi and a representative from the Humane Society of New York. At the ceremony, the students received an award certificate from Mr. Suozzi and an assortment of gifts from the Humane Society of New York.
What makes this contest so important is that it encourages the teaching of humane education and provides young students with an opportunity to think and write about kindness and respect towards animals. The vast majority of essays were heartfelt and they give us hope that our future generation will view animals with compassion and strive to provide animals with greater protection and rights.
Thanks to all of the students and teachers who participated in this contest. The winners this year were from Fairfield School in Massapequa, Hewitt Elementary School in Rockville Center,
St. Aidan School in Williston Park, Ogden Elementary School in Valley Stream, Our Lady of Victory Catholic School in Floral Park, and Meadowbrook Elementary School in East Meadow.
